Semler turned his family’s business, the aging Semco Corporation in Brazil, into the most revolutionary success story of our time.
Semler turned his family’s business, the aging Semco Corporation in Brazil, into the most revolutionary success story of our time. By eliminating unnecessary levels of management and allowing employees unprecedented democracy in the workplace, he created a company that challenged the old ways and paved the way for success in an unstable economy.
- I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss created.
From what I heard, jonathan r dariyanani he created a democratic workplace that is interesting to work in, and in general a good lesson on how to manage companies. So, when I found out that he wrote a book about it, I wanted to read it.
- And I was not disappointed. He clearly and thoroughly describes how he turned his fathers’ company from a bureaucratic, downward company into a much more democratic and fun job. And it all started with the fact that employees could vote on what color form they want.
- All in all, I love this book. This seems to be part of a new era of work different from the past. Era may not be the right word, but movement may be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE by Jodie Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kierulf with his website Positive Sharing as Chief Executive Officer for Happiness, Tim Ferriss with his four-hour work week, guys from 37signals and many others.
- I must have bought people 20 copies of this book … at least. This book is the best example of how democracy, honesty, transparency, and courage look in the workplace. They produce impressive financial results and deep satisfaction for employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and keep coming back to it again and again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here for small or large companies, trade organizations, restaurants, jonathan r dariyanani, technology companies and non-profit organizations. The book is radical … and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize by describing in detail what the work environment looks like with ultra-high trust, how much our jobs treat us like dishonest children … and we often live up to these expectations.
